ANARCHITRAVE - A LINTEL’S LAMENT

 Anarchitrave = an+architrave = lacking architrave

AnArchitrave were a band from the Brighton area and active 1990-1992.

In September 1991 we bought a 2 hour slot at Anzak studios. The engineer set the mixer then went down the pub for the remainder of session resulting in a live, single-take session. The mix was originally released in raw form on cassette.

This digitally re-mastered version is a vast improvement but retains some hiss and noise. Also available as MP3 downloads.

You can’t polish a turd.

In the beginning AnArchitrave had a song called  “Anarchitrave” that was first penned in July 1990 when Thatcher was Prime Minister and was nick-named the “Thatcher Masturbator song” because she was the only one in it. By the time this session was recorded Major was at the helm and the song thus appears modified accordingly as “Cabinet Maker”.

The short anarchist poem “A Lintel’s Lament” was often recited prior to the performance of this song

A LINTEL’S LAMENT

A lintel supports a labyrinth

Of lethargy and lies

Trust the tossers and tyrants

As their testament is tried.

Beware the woodworm burrows

On belly doth bestow

A feast of finest woodpulp

Westminster's best you know

In classical architecture the architrave was more specifically the horizontal lintel that supports the stuff above and was thus a very important thing that could be destroyed by woodworm if made of timber.

As subsequent prime ministers took office the song evolved further. The 2016 “Maggie May” version appears on the Domhwelus CD “Rogue Trait”. As of autumn 2019 there is no amendment for Boris although other songs dedicated to Boris are available.
